An engineer, Joseph was part of the crew of the Santa Maria colony vessel when it crashed on a planet where a Duonetic field prevented technology from working. Joseph found it hard to adapt to life on the planet, but came to appreciate the simple life which he was forced to live. He did not always appreciate the decisions of Alixus, the colony leader, and assisted Chief O'Brien in finding the true source of the field - which she had created. [1]
