Kalar

Universe : Prime Timeline
Species Name : Kalar [1]
Quadrant : Alpha [1]

The Kalar were native to the planet Rigel VII. In 2259 they were a pre-warp society with a Bronze age level of technology. At this stage the planet was bathed in radiation from an unusual asteroid, which caused unprotected Karar to loose their memories each night. They had discovered that certain ores could be used to protect the memories, either when used to build structures or in helmets, if constantly worn. [1]

The Kalar were thus divided into two groups. The Palace Karlar, who kept their memories each night and the field Kalar who had constant exposure to the radiation. The Field Kalar forgot any learned knowledge each night and had come to rely on carved totem poles to preserve the knowledge they needed to work beyond the "forgetting". [1]

When initially visited by the USS Enterprise a crew member, yeoman Nguyen, was accidentally left behind. When the Enterprise returned some time later they discovered that Zac had taken control of the planet and made himself King. [1]

Zac tried to protect his position by forcing the landing party to suffer the "Forgetting" and enslave them as Field Kalar. Fortunately, Pike was able to overcome the problems and return tot he palace, restoring his memory and removing Zac from power. As a final act he ordered the asteroid, that was the source of the radiation, removed from the reach of the planet. He felt that this was not against the prime directive as the arrival of the asteroid in the system was not part of the natural development of the planet. [1]
