A Starfleet officer who worked under Admiral Leyton, Benteen supported Leyton's efforts to increase security on Earth despite the illegal actions he undertook and the decreased freedom which would result for the population. [2] When Sisko attempted to expose Leyton's plot and ordered the Defiant to Earth to support him, he ordered Benteen to engage the warship in a modified Excelsior class starship. A brief battle resulted, but Benteen ultimately refused to destroy the Defiant. [3]
