Plotline

Discovery proceeds to the hyperfield and releases the hydrocarbon representing peace onto its surface. A short while later it is pulled into the structure and surrounded by an orb made of an unknown substance. They are now face to face with members of Species 10-C, who respond with more hydrocarbons and a light pattern. At first this doesn't make sense, however, Zora calculates that the timing of the release and the light pattern form a basic language.

Species 10-C uses the language to question why the DMA was destroyed by Tarka's weapon, and the crew are able to communicate their fear of the DMA back to them.

On Book's ship, Tarka plans to have Ndoye ignite a plasma stream from Discovery that will allow him to escape the orb and fly directly to the DMA's power source. Reno realizes that if Tarka takes the power source now, it will destroy the hyperfield and all inside it, leaving the DMA to continue on its path and destroy Earth and Ni'Var. Book confronts Tarka about this, but he uses his upgrades to the ship to restrain Book.

As the crew of Discovery attempt to ask Species 10-C to withdraw the DMA, Ndoye enacts Tarka's plan and Book's ship escapes. The 10-C members stop communicating and return the crew to Discovery. Reno is able to get a message to Burnham warning her of Tarka's plan.
