Plotline

The ship completes the proto-warp jump, having travelled 4,000-light-years into the Gamma Quadrant. Janeway allows the crew to use the holodeck and Dal uses it to take the Kobayashi Maru test, a Starfleet captaincy examination. Dal fails the test repeatedly. He even fails when he tries to win using a crew of Starfleet's most famous officers. Dal learns that it is a no-win scenario intended to make captains accept that some situations just cannot be beaten.

Meanwhile, Gwyn uses her knowledge of languages to discover that Protostar's original crew were captured by an unknown enemy.
