Plotline

The DMA vanishes and rapidly reappears over 1000 lightyears away, proving that it is not a naturally-occurring phenomenon. Scientist Ruon Tarka joins the ship to help determine who created it. He constructs a model of it but it requires more power to run than Discovery can provide.

Learning that the Radvek asteroid belt is in the DMA's new path, Discovery is sent to evacuate its population. The magistrate of the belt is grateful for their help and begins organizing for his people to beam aboard. However, he refuses to release a set of prisoners, who he refers to as "The Examples".

Burnham and Book beam down to release the prisoners themselves. The prisoners claim to have been imprisoned unjustly. Burnham convinces them to escape by offering them asylum on Discovery, but one, Felix, chooses to stay behind. He reveals that he stole an orb recording a family's heritage and was then involved in a fight with the owner, killing him. Book still wants to save him, but Burnham honours Felix's wishes, leaving him behind. He is killed when the asteroid belt is destroyed by the DMA. Burnham later gives the orb to the daughter of the man Felix killed.
