Plotline

The USS Cayuga, under command of Captain Batel, is sent on a mission to assist a human colony on Parnassus Beta, just outside of Federation space. Christine Chapel is on board Cayuga, en route to her fellowship and assists with the mission. Just as the mission is coming to an end the colony is ambushed by the Gorn. Batel manages to get a message out informing the federation of the attack.

En route, the Federation receive a communication from the Gorn, claiming the region of space that the colony is located in. April orders them not to cross into the Gorn-claimed space.

On arrival, the Enterprise find the wreckage of the Cayuga and a Gorn device jamming communications, scanners and transporters. Despite his orders Pike secretly leads Ortegas, La'an, M'Benga, and Sam Kirk to the surface. There they find Batel and other survivors, including Starfleet engineer Montgomery Scott who has built a cloaking device to hide them from the Gorn.

Following a strategy suggested by Uhura and Pelia, Spock space walks over to the wreckage of the Cayuga's saucer section and installs rockets on it. They intend to crash it into the jammer on the surface of the planet. While there he discovers Capel alive on the ship and together they fight off an adult Gorn, killing it in the process.

Down on the planet Pike learns that Batel has been infected with Gorn eggs. Shortly afterwards the jammer is destroyed, allowing the Enterprise to beam up Pike, Scott, and Batel; who is taken straight to sickbay. The Gorn beam up La'an, M'Benga, Ortegas, Sam and the other survivors to their ship. Pike is forced to decide whether to follow orders and retreat or stay to rescue his captured crew.
