Plotline

Another of the mysterious signals appears, this time leading Discovery to Saru's homeworld of Kaminar. There the fearful Kelpiens are preyed upon by predators called the Ba'ul. When they arrive the Ba'ul demand that Pike surrender Saru to them, since Starfleet has agreed to stay out of the conflict between the two. Pike refuses, but Saru turns himself over to prevent a fight.

Tilly works with Lieutenant Commander Airiam, a cybernetically enhanced Starfleet officer, to sift through the Sphere's information on Kaminar. They learn that the fearless, post Vahar'ai Kelpiens were once Kaminar's dominant species until they were nearly wiped out by the Ba'ul. The Ba'ul were only able to survive by using their superior technology to cull the Kelpiens before they lose their threat ganglia, becoming fearless. Pike uses the Ba'ul's technology to trigger Vahar'ai in all Kelpiens, hoping that the two species can work towards a peaceful solution once the Kelpiens are free.

The Ba'ul respond to Starfleet's actions by attempting to commit genocide on the Kelpiens, but are stopped by the "Red Angel", whom Saru discovers is a humanoid wearing a highly-advanced suit.
