Plotline

During a resupply mission to an outpost on the Romulan Neutral Zone, performed by the USS Enterprise and USS Cayuga, Pike meets one of the future cadets that he will sacrifice himself for. He decides to send warnings to them to prevent the accident from happening in the first place. Before he can do it, he is visited by a future version of himself from a timeline where the accident doesn't happen.

Future Pike shows him what will happen if he continues with his plan to prevent the accident. Seven years into the future the USS Enterprise witnesses a Romulan Bird of Prey destroying the neutral zone outpost. Together with the USS Faragut, captained by James T. Kirk they track the ship. Kirk suggests an aggressive approach but Pike insists on negotiating. Pike calls for a ceasefire and the Romulan commander agrees. However, his deputy summons an armada of Romulan ships that damage the Entreprise, severely injuring Spock in the process. The Romulans declare war on the Federation. Returned to his own timeline, Pike accepts that his fate is necessary to save Spock and prevent war with the Romulans.

Captain Batel of the USS Cayuga comes aboard the Enterprise and arrests Number One for being a genetically altered Illyrian.
