A character from the Charles Dickens novel 'A Christmas Carol', Marley was the deceased partner of Ebenezer Scrooge. Marley's ghost was the first spirit to visit Scrooge, to warn him of the dangers of his selfish miserly life and of the impending arrival of the three spirits of Christmas. On the Enterprise-D, Data would play the part of Scrooge in a holonovel version of the book in hopes that depicting the emotion of fear would help him to better understand it. [1]
