Whilst the Enterprise-D investigates problems with the Argus Array, they crew encounter a Cytherian probe; Lieutenant Barclay finds that the probe has massively boosted his I.Q. and self confidence, ultiamtely allowing him to transport the ship to the centre of the galaxy. There his I.Q. boost is reversed and the ship spends several days learning about the Cytherians before being returned. [1]
