The Enterprise picks up a badly wounded alien, whom they nickname 'John Doe" as he has no memory of his identity. John proves to be a member of the Zalkonian species, which is in the process of evolving to a non-corporeal state. Despite some interference from a Zalkonian warship, John successfully completes the transformation. [1]
