Plotline

Prior to Discovery's arrival and being unable to locate the ship in 3188, Burnham becomes a courier and works with Book, while searching for clues about the fate of the Federation. She finds a transmission from Admiral Senna Tal from Earth, but they are unable to travel there with the limited dilithium they have available.

A year later, Discovery arrives in the future and Burnham finds them on the glacier. Saru becomes captain, and Discovery's dilithium supply is stored on Book's cloaked ship, which he parks in their docking bay, for safety.

Using the spore drive, they travel to Earth and find that it is no longer a part of the Federation. Investigators from the United Earth Defense Force come aboard and tell them that Tal, who was a Trill, is dead. At this point the ship is attacked by dilithium bandits. The EDF attempt to destroy the bandits, until Burnham and Book trick them and capture their leader Wen.

In negotiations between Wen and EDF Captain Ndoye, the two sides realize that they can help each other and prevent further fighting.

A young human investigator named Adira is identified as the new host of Tal's symbiont but is unable to access his memories.
