Not exactly brilliant. Here was one of the few times we see Picard mishandling something. Obviously, the Prime Directive should be paramount here, but (most likely because of his feelings about Dr Crusher - although that's not mentioned) he succeeded in shoving that out of an airlock and going with what seemed the easy way out. Duty should transcend that, but it did not, and here Picard allowed himself to be swayed away from his duty. When Starfleet Command hears of it, he should find himself on the carpet. Yar also messed up, since she forgot to explain what she DIDN'T know but should have expected to, namely the way laws are enforced. We had the interesting 'God in a space station' concept, something that would reappear with the Caretaker, but I would have preferred to see that developed more, perhaps with a visit to an Edo temple to help understand how they see 'God'. The future of the Federation colony is unclear, but how does one negotiate with a 'god' over colonisation rights? On other matters, it's not only the women who run around in skimpy costumes in TNG, or so it seems. I also have to complain about the dialogue, which is a bit clunky (something that often affected early TNG). Still, it was fairly watchable. |
