Plotline

The USS Enterprise is undergoing upgrades in Spacedock, with the assistance of an unusual engineer called Pelia. Whilst there they receive a distress call from security chief La'an Noonien-Singh on the mining planet Cajitar IV. With first officer Una "Number One" Chin-Riley arrested and Captain Christopher Pike recruiting her defence counsel, Vulcan science officer Spock has been left in command. He disobeys Admiral Robert April's orders and steals the Enterprise in order to mount a rescue mission.

After finding La'an on Cajitar IV, she explains that a cabal of ex-Starfleet and Klingon soldiers are plotting to restart the recently ended Klingon–Federation war. The cabal plans to use it to fire on a Klingon ship and frame Starfleet.

Dr. Joseph M'Benga and nurse Christine Chapel are captured and taken to a ship that has been cobbled together from Starfleet technology. M'Benga and Chapel fight their way off the false flag ship just as Spock orders its destruction, saving the Klingon ship.

Spock bonds with the Klingon captain over a barrel of blood wine.

April reprimands Spock, but is privately grateful that war with the Klingons was avoided considering the impending threat of the Gorn.
