When an old and very massive star runs low on fuel it causes fusion to fail. This reduces the outward pressure and allows gravity to take over and collapse the star. When gravity produces a sufficiently dense star it re-ignites and causes a massive explosion called a supernova, blowing off the outer layers of the star, often resulting in a nebula. [1]
