One of the children who accompanied the Starnes expedition, O'Connel became a follower of the noncorporeal entity named Gorgan. He attempted to take control of the ship by using the abilities which Gorgan had given him to manipulate the crew. Gorgan's control over O'Connell was broken when Captain Kirk forced him to confront the death of his parents on the expedition. [1]
