Van Gelder was a doctor at the Tantalus V penal colony. When he objected to Doctor Adams's unethical treatments Adams used a mind altering machine on Van Gelder, driving him to the point of insanity. Nevertheless he was able to escape and warn the Enterprise crew of the conditions on Tantalus V. [1]
