A Romulan miner, Ayel was the Narada's first officer under Captain Nero. Ayel questioned Captain Robau when he boarded the Narada, and watched as Nero murdered him. Like the rest of the crew he spent the next 25 years waiting for Ambassador Spock to arrive in the past before kidnapping him and stealing his ship. Ayel later prepared the red matter thus gained for its use against Vulcan. When Kirk and Spock boarded the Narada Ayel knocked Kirk out and subsequently almost strangled him to death. Kirk was able to pull Ayel's sidearm and kill him. [1]
