Human female, Captain of the USS Cayuga [1] who took command in 2245. [2] She was in a romantic relationship with Captain Pike and a frequent visitor to his home in Montata. [1] Later in 2258 while the USS Cayuga and the USS Enterprise were on a mission to upgrade the Federation outposts along the Romulan neutral zone, Betal was ordered to board the Enterprise and take Una Chin-Riley into custody for being generically modified, admitting that she didn't like the order. [3]

Shortly afterwards Batel acted as prosecutor for the judge advocate general's office during Chin-Riley's court-martial, under the leadership of Vice Admiral Pasalk. Batel attempted to get a good plea deal for Chin-Riley but she turned down the offer. Utilimately, the case resulted in an acquitted for Chin-Riley as her lawyer argued that she had essentially sought political asylum from Starfleet, which was allowed under Federation law. [3]

Shortly afterwards Batel was passed over for promotion due to concerns about her. Both pike and Batel assumed it was because she lost the Chin-Riley case. [4]

Later in 2259, the USS Cayuga and the USS Enterprise were assigned to chart a new binary system. After the events on Rigel VII, Yeoman Zacarias Nguyen was transferred to the Cayuga for transport to court-marshal and possible prison. [4]

While assisting colonists with vaccinations on Parnassus Beta the USS Cayuga was destroyed by the Gorn and the colonists and remaining crew were captured and transported to the Gorn ship. Batel managed to transmit a distress call which was answered by the USS Enterprise. [5] They noted a beacon on the planet that was blocking communications and transporter operations. Spock managed to destroy the beacon by crashing the remains of the Cayuga saucer section into it. USS Enterprise crew on board the Gorn ship manned to escape, steal the transporter codes and a ship. Returning to the Enterprise the they were able to beam the remains of the colonists away and their missing crew. Later they also discovered a method for putting the Gorn into an extended hybernation period. [2]

Unfortunately, when batel was returned she was already infected with Gorn eggs and given two days before they would hatch. The Enterprise crew worked to try and remove the eggs without success. Eventualy they managed to regress the embrios into an earlier stage and then used Illyrian plasma to stabilise her condition. [2]

Several months later the infection raised its head again. M'Benga and Pike went on an away mission to Kenfori to retrieve a Chimera Blossom. M'Benga used the plant to hybridise Batel's and the Gorn's own DNA to produce a stable body. [6]

When Batel came into contact with a Vezda she reacted instinctively with aggression attempting to kill him. Later she described it as a feeling they the Vezda were pure evil and had to be stopped. Assuming it to be some form of genetic memory from her Gorn side. [7]

Months later Batel met the Vezda again and this time she was able to return all the escaping Vezda into a dimensional prison, transforming herself into The Beholder, a living statue that stood guard over the Well of Orbs. [8]
