Mid-series finale starts in about 80 minutes.

Had to laugh at the Sontaran. "I've dreamed of dying in battle all my life. I have to say, I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would."

I really hoped that Rory would have his gun arm back though the Gladius & plasma pistol combo worked for me :pulsegun:

This one-week offset between the Beeb and the Beeb-America is really becoming annoying.

We used to have to wait six months or more for stuff from America to make it over here, you know...

I've read spoilers, as is my habit. Interesting, to say the least. Can't wait until next week!

Alright, watched it and was suitably impressed. My takes:

#1) "Let them die first, OK?"
"You're so Scottish!"
Classic.

#2) Both the role of Rory and Darvill's performance have gotten SO much better as the season's gone along.

#3) This was perhaps the clearest example of why I've grown to like the Matt Smith Doctor. He portrays a Doctor - at least as much through Moffatt's writing as his own performance - who brilliantly juxtaposes his universe-altering power with the most banal, human motivations. It is even more poignant when we see him railing against those motivations knowing that a civilized person - a Time Lord, no less! - needs to hold himself to a higher standard and that these baser components of his personality are a direct cause of the evils in his life. Of course, when the Doctor is concerned, the evils in his life tend to encompass and threaten at least one universe. When River stood him up and told him that he can't hold himself free of blame for the events that have taken place, I almost cheered... not because I wanted to see him taken down a peg, but because it was so humanizing.

BTW, Striker - how do you feel about Dr. Song now?

I'll get to that in a bit. ;)

Okay, my take. Fabulous episode. The Doctor losing at the end... kinda needed that, actually. He's grown 'too' powerful, IMHO. I remember when he really was just a madman with a box, even before the Cartmell masterplan, and not some avenging god. I don't like characters with too big an ego. Too powerful, too uber. Zoe Heriot was smarter than the Second, and Romana got triple A's in Time Lord Academy IIRC. Ian stopped him from killing the caveman.

I mean, if he's so powerful, where's the conflict then? If he can snap his fingers and make armies flee at his sight, so what? I mean yes, I want the good guys to ultimately triumph, but give some danger first, some intrigue!

As for River... her little speech at the end? I loved it. What the hell, hero, as the trope goes. As for the revelation that
she's Amy and Rory's daughter and has 'Time Lord DNA'... bullshit! Yeah, I hate her even more. I just-yeah. Canon Sue, here.
Also, what the hell is 'Time Lord DNA'? That makes no sense! Gallifreyan DNA, okay. But Time Lords, last time I checked, were a specific subunit of Gallifreyan culture and not all of them!

That's far from clear, last I heard.

Indeed, it's just as possible that the Time Lords were the dominant species on Gallifrey, not just the elite of the species.
