First launched in the Great Sith War, the Hammerhead-class Cruiser quickly became a mainstay of the Galactic Republic Navy. They served in numerous wars, from the Great Sith War, all the way to the New Sith Wars 1500 years later. Constant upgrades and new ships kept this class state of the art for nearly 3000 years.

I think this is a very nice ship. Well designed, and athstetically pleasing. It doesn't look like it was made of scrap metal. Nice paint job.

The KOTOR games and comics gave a lot of nice designs. This is a Star Wars ship, by the way.stitch626 wrote:I think this is a very nice ship. Well designed, and athstetically pleasing. It doesn't look like it was made of scrap metal. Nice paint job.

I know. And I agree, the KOTOR ships look cool and somewhat practical (compared to most). Pretty too.

KOTOR seemed to be the 'Star Trek:TNG' era of ship design.stitch626 wrote:I know. And I agree, the KOTOR ships look cool and somewhat practical (compared to most). Pretty too.

It kind of follows the flow of ships though in Star Wars. If you go back to 5,000 years they're even more artistic and strange. Then at 4000 you get these smooth ships. Then the contemporaries look rather ugly. I wonder if this is a concious thought on the different creators of Star Wars ships over the years.
How many Minbari does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
None. They always surrender right before they finish the job and never tell you why.

I believe that Lucas has said it was, at least the differences from the Old Republic ships to the OT ships.Monroe wrote:It kind of follows the flow of ships though in Star Wars. Re: Ship of the Week: Hammerhead-class Cruiser
There was a concious decision to use different style vessels to make them easily recognisable as PT era ships. IU we can rationalise the design changes as the Republic/Empire refining their designs into more efficent models.Mikey wrote:

a/o the Empire caring less about aesthetics than function. In addition, Lucas had wanted the Rebel Alliance ships to look like what a guerilla force would field; not so shiny, not so sleek or pretty.

Re: Ship of the Week: Hammerhead-class Cruiser
All makese sense. I guess that's why the Great Hyperspace War era ships look kind of medieval and semi-mythological because it was such a vast distance in the past they wanted them to look truely unique. And the KOTOR developers instead went for more of the classical Republic design styles.
You can kind of see what I would call a medieval-ish style ship design in the Great Hyperspace War:

http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Ba ... War%29.jpg
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Se ... rriban.jpg
So they look a bit olden inspired.
Then you go back further you get things like http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Pius_Dea_Crusades straight out of the middle ages. Though no literature or games takes place around that time you can sense that the various production designers on the different projects over the years have tried to setup some sense in more primitive the further back you go.
Go back further and you get things like the hundred years of darkness: http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Image:Schism3.jpg
Its just interesting I think to see the progression in ship designs.

Re: Ship of the Week: Hammerhead-class Cruiser
I like this ship. I looks like a smart design for the times. Small forward profile with a far amount of fire power. If its just a light cruiser meant for mass production I could see it being very useful.
That and it both looks good and fills it intended purpose at the same time.

Armed, I see, with the dreaded and rare "foom" cannon.
