All Betazoids have black irises (Troi included), because all the actors who play them where contact lenses - normal ones, not coloured make-up lenses.

Was that intentional, or just a freak coincidence?

I'm not sure - it may have been unintentional initially, with Marina Sirtis and Majel Barrett coincidentally wearing contacts, but they later made it a species trait. That's just speculation, however.

But are Troi's truly black? They seem to have lightened in later years.

I read a few fanfictions were the eyes were tied into their telepathy somehow. I am pretty sure that is fanon not canon though.

Was that stating that Betazoid eyes play a part in their telepathy, or was it used in a metaphorical sense, of being able to "see through you" or somesuch?

I don't see how the former could work - they're telepaths, not hypnotists.

Yes from what I read it ment that they utilized their eyes somehow to inhance their powers.

So no blind Betazoid telepaths, huh?

How could that possibly work? They don't need to make eye contact to initiate their telepathy. Why would it affect their eyes?

Maybe they will come up with some sort of variation like they did with why the Klingons looked different, etc... maybe the race is in hybernation during the time of TNG/DS9...

G-d knows there are enough variations already. TOS, TMP, TNG, and ENT all had different Andorians.

I think Enterprise got the Andorians right - (not often do I praise Enterprise!) they are an important part of the trek universe, but an example of bad 60's make up. The changes they made make them far less ridiculous looking, but still instantly recognizable as the species from the TOS.

Yeah the way Enterprise portrayed Andorians was rather good compared to the others. But then the others didnt give them enough time to really develope.
