Re: Forum unavailable - Final Chance.
Indeed, which is what I have done... We are now migrated, but before everyone panics and says that it's no faster. We are still using the old machine for the time being.
I've spent the best part of the last 3 hours testing and planning the move from one server to another and I've pretty much got it all planned:
- I will take down the forum on the old server tomorrow morning at 10am.
- I will then copy the database from the old server to the new server.
- I will then bring up the forum on the new server.
This should take no more than 45 minutes in total. Once it's done I will need to kill of the old DNS (name server entries) and activate the new one. This bit can take a little time (not for me to do but for you to see the effect of the change), however during this time you can access the new site via it's IP address. I will publish this on both the main site home page and here in the forum on both the old and new servers at the time of going live.
Given I'm the only one that is involved in this it should all go fine.
The new server has a certain amount of CPU speed and Memory available to it. If we find the it is not fast enough then we can magically change those settings without even rebooting the machine. It's currently running at 800MHz but I have options to go to 1.5GHz and 2.2GHz. Memory is currently at 512MB but it can be turned up to 1GB or even 2GB. Obviously these come at a cost so I will start low and up the settings as required.
Just to give you a feel for the current box, it is less than 800MHz and has 512MB of RAM. The problem is whilst the RAM is guaranteed the CPU isn't. If someone on the same shared server over uses their CPU then we can loose out and not get our full quota. This cannot happen with the new server set-up. If we pay for 800MHz we get 800MHz no matter what other people do. So the future should be good.

Hmm. Sounds better than my solution of "sacrifice a goat to try and appease the machine spirits."

Was this change ever made?

"But it doesn't have to happen again. Not if we make up our minds to change. Take a different path. Right here, right now."

After all of the above issues we had an interruption when Ian headed off on holiday. More updates on the situation will follow in a week or so.

Re: Forum unavailable - Final Chance.
It's coming, I'm going to attempt it on the Bank holiday weekend. (28-30th May). I've got to move the email for Graham, my parents and my wife before I can kill off the old server.
