Re: [40k] new SM design - critique, please?
Thanks. I see a lot of fan-made chapters - mostly fic to go along with a paint scheme - about one of the lost legions, or a Second Founding chapter, or some other stuff that just doesn't make any sense. If the Revenants had been around for a few millenia and/or had been one of the Astartes Praeses chapters or fought in the Macharian Crusade or something... well, everyone would have heard of them by now. I wanted something new, with their own flavor. Besides, the last successor of the Raven Guard that I know of was the Black Dragons of the 22nd Founding, and I'd guess after that it would be a while before anyone tried to start something with that gene-seed again.
When and if I get around to it (read: feel like it,) I might add some bits about the fleet composition, chapter serf cult/arms - they defend the fortress-monastery and crew the ships, after all - etc.

True, and fluff wise fleet assets are needed. Thats why I kept my fleet issues short and simple with my chapter. Since they're attached to a larger whole, they don't have to supply themselves with ships and support troops.

Chapter Fleet
Even though the chapter is new, the alliance/protectorate status of Forge World Tolkhan has allowed it to field a full chapter fleet of three battle barges and nine strike cruisers. The battle barges Anubis, Charon, and Baron Samedi have seen little action as yet due to the limited nature of the Revenants' actions so far - the strike cruisers Bean-sidhe, Anouk, Sigrun, Brynhildr, Yamadut, Ghede, Cu Sith, Luison, and Orcus are more experienced but are carefully maintained by the chapter's Techmarines and enginseers from Tolkhan. Each naturally carries a full complement of Thunderhawks, Caestus assault rams w/ frag assault launchers, drop pods, and Space Marine Landing Craft as appropriate; the Revenants' Armory has also acquired the Storm Eagle landing craft (typhoon missile launcher,) Fire Raptor gunship (twin-linked autocannons,) and Stormtalon gunship (Skyhammer missile launcher.)
The chapter fleet also contains 21 Gladius-class frigates and nine Hunter-class destroyers, normally formed into squadrons of two Gladii and one Hunter each with three Gladii in reserve for squad-level deployments. Three of the controversial Nova-class frigates are also kept for defense of the local systems/recruitment worlds, or more rarely for escorts into hostile-controlled space lanes.
Chapter Serfs
As with most chapters, aspirants who fail to become Marines are given the option of remaining with the Revenants as chapter serfs, equerries, etc., fully inducted into the chapter cult. Chapter serfs are trained and armed in order to fight in defense of The Crypt, and are equipped with carapace armor and bolters. Shotguns are used by those defending sensitive areas or ship crews, and meltaguns and flamers are used as special weapons with autocannons as support weapons. Sentry guns (twin-linked heavy bolters, multi-meltas, or twin-linked lascannons) and Hyperios air defense batteries are also employed in defense of The Crypt as well as by the chapter in the field. The Crypt is also protected by emplaced flamestorm cannons, Aquila macro-cannons, battle cannons, turbo-laser destructors, Rapier laser destroyers, graviton cannons, and quad heavy bolters.

Re: [40k] new SM design - critique, please?
I basically went by the BFG descriptions of SM fleets, and judged numbers by typical chapter deployments - well-to-do chapters, because of my guys' relationship with a Forge World. I threw in only three Novas, because of the skunk-eye they get from the Navy and the big "I."
BTW, if you haven't seen the Caestus assault ram yet, it is a SM's wet dream, if they could have one (except for the Scars.) A link to the experimental rules is under the main pic box.

Makes sense, I only gave my chapter 14 fast cruisers because they aren't supposed to be able to act as a full fleet on their own.Mikey wrote:I basically went by the BFG descriptions of SM fleets, and judged numbers by typical chapter deployments - well-to-do chapters, because of my guys' relationship with a Forge World. Your guys would be sick in fleet raids.BTW, if you haven't seen the Caestus assault ram yet, it is a SM's wet dream, if they could have one (except for the Scars.) A link to the experimental rules is under the main pic box.

Do you have some sort of system that combines fleet combat and ground combat?Deepcrush wrote: Your guys would be sick in fleet raids.

Yeah, you fight your fleet battles and if someone boards your ship you fight out a pre-picked ground battle.

If you haven't checked out the PDF about the Caestus rules that I linked above, do so, Deep. A squad or two of assault marines, right through the hull...
