Plotline
Pike causes a fight with Batel by suggesting that their relationship has harmed her career.
The Enterprise is sent to the planet Rigel VII, the site of an earlier unsuccessful mission. Asteroids surrounding the planet emit radiation that makes people forget who they are. Pike, La'an, and M'Benga discover that Zac Nguyen, a yeoman presumed dead on the previous mission, has become a despotic ruler; arming his guards with phaser rifles. He has enforced a caste system on the planet where field labourers lose their memories every night but he and his guards are able to keep theirs.
Zac banishes the away team to the fields, where they lose their memories and become labourers. Local legends tell of a chest stored in Nguyen's castle that contains all of their memories.
The crew on the Enterprise also lose their memories, but pilot Erica Ortegas learns what her job is from the ship's computer and navigates away from the asteroids. Once clear of the field the crews memories return and Spock is able to configure the shields to filter out the harmful radiation, allowing them to return to the planet.
Pike fights his way inside the castle and defeats Nguyen learning that the chest only contains Federation devices and that it is the castle itself that blocks the radiation, allowing its occupants to retain their memories. After spending time in the castle the away team recover their memories and return to the Enterprise.
Pike has the main asteroid pulled out of orbit, ridding Rigel VII of the radiation and restoring memories of the planets occupants. He apologises to Batel and they resume their relationship.
