Plotline
Tarka requires isolynium to complete his new weapon. Burnham knows which black market dealer Book will contact to try and purchase it. President Rillak refuses to let her go after Book and Vance publicly agrees with her. He secretly gives Burnham different orders to gather data on 10-C's coordinates and at the same time try to get the isolynium before Book and Tarka are able to.
Book and Tarka arrive at a casino on Porathia and meet with Haz Mazaro, who agrees to sell them the isolynium if Book will use his empathetic powers to discover a cheater who is costing him money.
Burnham and operations officer Joann Owosekun arrive soon after and buy star charts from Mazaro that map 10-C's coordinates.
They attempt to outbid Book and Tarka for the isolynium but don't have sufficient funds. Owosekun takes part in prize fights run by the casino to earn them more money. They approach Mazaro with the money just as Book captures a cheater. He decides to choose who will gain the isolynium with a card game.
Book wins the game and claims the isolynium, but Burnham is able to plant a tracker on package.
The star charts they have purchased reveal a large, artificial "hyperfield" beyond the galactic barrier, and data suggests that it is powered by a rare element called boronite. Examining the remains of Book's planet they find it is missing all traces of boronite and they calculate that the DMA's purpose is to mine planets for the element.
