OK, I've found, with the help of "Miss Marple", and fixed another problem with the caption competition. Apparently it was truncating the caption at the first ", leading to a short caption. The spam message is shown if the caption and name matches an existing one. The things taken together lead to the current problem. This is now addressed. It greatly simplifies identification and correction of the problem.
