Notes

The McKinley class stations are an example of a modern drydock-style facility. They comprise a central hub attached to five long articulated 'arms'. A Starship is placed beneath the hub, allowing the arms to wrap around it. Where the older drydock designs have no habitation area of their own, the hub of the McKinley class has considerable space for a permanent work staff. This allows it to operate independently of outside support for as long as the construction materials last, a great advantage over most drydocks.

McKinley itself is located in Earth orbit. It is used for larger starships such as the Galaxy class. [1]

Comments

This station was seen in the TNG episode "Family", where it repaired the Enterprise-D after "Best of Both Worlds, Part II". We learned very little about the station during the episode and it has only ever been seen once since, in the flashback scenes in "All Good Things".

As said in the text, the station appears to consist of a habitable hub attached to a set of five articulated arms - although it's pretty hard to tell exactly how many arms there are in any of the images. Having a habitable area in the station would make it more useful than a simple framework, since it would allow a crew of engineers to be permanently placed there. There may also be some sort of industrial scale replicator system for fabricating parts, but we can't know this for sure.
