Sentient species native to the planet Varala. The Changeling Laas grew up on Varala after being sent out into the Galaxy by his people as an infant. His name is the Varalan word for "changeable". As of 2375 no Federation ship had ever been to Varala. Laas described it as "just the same as any other planet overrun with humanoids... cities and farms everywhere, other lifeforms displaced from their habitats." He noted that he had spent some time on the southern continent living with a herd of Volg; when the Volg breeding grounds were fenced off, the herd died out within two generations. [1]
