Notes

The Vahklas class was a Vulcan design1 common in the late 21st and early 22nd century. The ship shows tyical design features of Vulcan ships of this period; the nacelles show clear progression towards the ring structure2 which would be a feature of the Surak,3 Sh'Ran4 and D'Kyr5 classes, while the large central hull is an ancestor of the more streamlined axial hulls of the Surak3 and Sh'Ran4 classes.

By 2150 the Vahklas class was considered obsolete, though a handful remained in use by civilians.1 By 2154 a group of these ships had been reactivated by the High Command for use in the planned war against the Andorians.6

Comments

The Vahklas was first seen in Enterprise "Fusion". We know relatively little about the ship except that it is pretty much obsolete by this episode - T'Pol declares that the ships have not been used in a long time, and considering Vulcan life spans that could mean centuries.

The most interesting feature is the partially ring-shaped nacelles. Since enterprise-era ships have full ring nacelles, it seems that this is a feature which has evolved over time - early Vulcan ships probably had nacelles on either side, and these gradually become more elongated and curved until they finally met above and below. It is always nice to see a logical progression in ship designs like this.

We don't have a class name for the Vahklas, so I have followed my policy of using the name of the first ship seen as the class name until we get something more official.
