Notes

A ship built in the Kelvin timeline in 2233, the Enterprise was the flagship of the Federation fleet. Built on a surface shipyard in Riverside, Iowa, the ship began construction sometime prior to 2255 and was launched in 2258 [4]

In comparison the the preferred timeline version of the Enterprise, this Enterprise is substantially different.  [1]Most noticeably, the ship is more than twice the length of the original. [3] The general configuration is the same, with a saucer at the front, engineering hull below, and twin nacelles. However the hull lines are rather sleeker and there are many detail changes both exterior and interior. [1] It appears that the loss of the Kelvin prompted the alternate Starfleet into a much higher pace of ship development, advancing the understanding of warp field dynamics significantly beyond the state of the art in the preferred timeline. [5] The Enterprise launched in 2258 as part of a Starfleet response to an apparent natural disaster on Vulcan. The crew was largely comprised of cadets pressed into service as part of the emergency. The disaster at Vulcan proved to be the result of an attack by Nero on his ship the Narada; the Enterprise was the lone survivor of the fleet, though the ship was unable to stop the Narada from destroying Vulcan with red matter. James Kirk, in temporary command of the ship after Captain Pike was abducted by Nero and Spock was forced to resign his temporary Captaincy through being emotionally compromised by the destruction of Vulcan, pursued the Narada to Earth. The ship warped directly into Titan's atmosphere, where the effect of Saturn's rings prevented the Narada from detecting it. Kirk and Spock were able to beam to the Narada, Kirk rescuing Pike and Spock stealing the supply of red matter. Nero pursued Spock, firing a barrage of torpedoes at his ship, but the Enterprise was able to intercept and destroy the swarm, allowing Spock to ram the Narada with his ship. The impact ignited the red matter, creating a black hole within Nero's ship. [1]

Although Captain Kirk offered assistance to the crippled Narada, Nero angrily refused. Kirk responded with a phaser and photon torpedo barrage which destroyed the ship. [1]

On Kirk's graduation from Starfleet he was appointed as Pike's replacement as the permanent Captain of the Enterprise. [1]

The new Enterprise is controversial most notably because of her much larger size as compared to the TOS/TMP versions. We can only speculate as to why the change to much larger ships happened; presumably Starfleet looked at the loss of the Kelvin to a Romulan ship some five miles long and decided that they needed to build bigger, better ships.

One might speculate that the much increased size is why the ship was constructed on the surface rather than in orbit. Humans have been building big stuff in an environment of gravity and atmosphere for a real long time now; in many ways it's far easier than doing it in space. Launching such a large ship would surely be no great difficulty given that Trek ships can surely achieve accelerations far beyond the 1g+ such a launch would require.

The speed of the ship is another oddity; official sources cite Warp 8, which is reasonable, but the trip to Vulcan implies speeds which are pretty impressive. Just how fast any given warp factor is is a long source of debate, and this is only going to confuse things more. Whilst I've gone with Warp 8 for the article, be clear on two things; the movie itself never says the ship can or does do Warp 8 (the highest figure given is Warp 4, and that's after the ship is damaged), and there is no completely solid canonical number for just how fast Warp 8 is, anyway.
