Universe : Prime Timeline
Name : Captain Rana Desai [1]
Species : Humans

A Starfleet officer, Captain Desai was a member of the JAG corps in 2265. A specialist in interstellar law, she served as the chief JAG officer aboard Starbase 47 (Vanguard). She was considered to be an good investigator and an excellent trial lawyer. She was willing to bend rules when needed, but only to a point - she was quick to exert her authority any time she considered that the law was being bent too far. This brought her into conflict with Commodore Reyes on occasion. [1] This conflict became more pronounced when Reyes informed Desai of the real purpose of the Vanguard station and the Federation's expansion into the Taurus Reach. Although she agreed to keep the secret, she informed Reyes that even such classified work must have oversight and conform to Federation policies and laws. [2]

Despite their occasional professional conflicts, Desai and Reyes were engaged in a romantic relationship. [1] Their relationship was badly strained when Reyes revealed the true purpose of the Federation's expansion into the Taurus Reach to the public, for which he was removed from command and court martialled. As the senior JAG officer on the station Desai was initially responsible for preparing the prosecution's case, but she fully expected to be removed from the case as a result of her relationship with Reyes. This did happen eventually, whereupon Reyes appointed Desai as his defence counsel. She revealed that whilst she had spent her days preparing a strong case against him, she had then spent her evenings preparing counters for each prosecution point. [3]

She was a petite woman of Indian heritage, with black hair which she wore in a simple bob cut; in 2265 she was in her late 30s. [1] She had a London accent. [3]
