The Sahara class cruisers were a ploy to utilize the old and obsolete Ambassador class cruisers. The ambassador engineering hull was combined with the saucer section of a New Orleans class ship and an experimental nacelle design was added. The resulting ship ws the Sahara class. she performed relatively well, breathing a new life into the Ambassador hull and complimenting the aging fleet starfleet was working to replace. The armament was replaced with the heavy weapons currently avaliable and she was given the latest technology of the time period. The main weakness was the overall reduction in beam firepower over the Ambassador class, but the increase in torpedo tubes was seen to compensate for this/
