Which is why you have a small group insisting it isn't Trek.
And a much larger group which considers it the best of 'Trek.

I fail to see how DS9 contradicts Gene Roddenberry getting laid and making money.

While not my favorite, it was good. And it was Trek. Just slightly different.
No trees were killed in transmission of this message. However, some electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

Besides, none of the series have been the same. They've all been pretty different in how things work out.

TOS, a political movement based out of the future.
TNG, hippie land and all of their failures.
DS9, the dark age were everyone has to pay the price for the hippie failures.
VOY, future suck where people are thrown in the brig for using IQ.
ENT, super Vulcans and Humans that can't tell time.

Aye, those with a sense of good taste recognise it's up there.

Are you sure it isn't just those that can't stand the idea of others occupying a higher moral ground than they do?
"What goody two-shoes, who do they think they are, so much better than me?"

They could have made a great show of the last vestiges of Starfleet and the Federation seeking any and all allies to throw off the yoke of the Dominion.
They say that in the Army,
the women are mighty fine.
They look like Phyllis Diller,
and walk like Frankenstein.
