Plotline

The Enterprise attempts to deliver an air filter to a Federation colony but finds many of the colonists dead. Security chief La'an recognizes the situation as a Gorn trap, being the only survivor of a previous attack as a child. A Gorn ship attacks the Enterprise causing significant damage. With the ship's systems offline, M'Benga and nurse Chapel resort to 21st century medicine to treat the wounded. The Enterprise lures the Gorn into the atmosphere of a brown dwarf in orbit around a black hole, rendering each ship's sensors and shields ineffective. Spock manages to come up with a system to track the Gorn and they are able to destroy it, however, more Gorn ships arrive. Another Gorn ship is destroyed by the atmospheric pressure when it goes too deep into the star. Spock performs a mind-meld on La'an to learn about the Gorn's communication system. They use the information gleaned to trick one Gorn ship into firing at another. They then warp around the black hole and jettison the air filter, which is destroyed, tricking the gorn into believing that the Enterprise has been destroyed.
