Plotline

In an attempt to protect the Sphere data from being taken by Control, a rogue artificial intelligence which attempted to destroy all sentient life in the universe, Michael Burnham time travels into the future and the arrives in the year 3188 where she learns that she was successful.

On arrival she crashes into the ship of Cleveland "Book" Booker, a courier transporting stolen cargo. He explains that in an event called "The Burn" most of the galaxy's dilithium exploded, destroying many starships including most of Starfleet. Now the galaxy is disconnected and the United Federation of Planets is all but gone.

Burnham helps Book protect his cargo, an endangered trance worm that he is taking to a sanctuary, away from other couriers. In exchange, Book takes her to a seemingly abandoned Federation space station where they find Aditya Sahil, a "Federation liaison" waiting in the hope that a Starfleet officer would come to the station one day. Burnham, as the most senior Starfleet officer they are aware of, gives him an acting Starfleet commission.

Sahil is unable to locate the USS Discovery, which was travelling to the future with Burnham.
