So we have now seen Star Wars take a leap by making a new anthology movie known as Rogue One. Can anyone say that they see Star Trek now taking this direction as well?

Don't know that there will be more Trek movies. But if there are, I'd certainly be happy to see a brand new ship/crew.

As for doing some kind of side story that fills in some detail we know about but haven't seen... there's stuff they could do. Like the Earth-Romulan war, for instance. Or Axanar.

Or maybe the adventures of the USS Enterprise-B?

Or Captain Sulu on the Excelsior.

But honestly I'd rather see a break from the Enterprise and her crew in a movie like that. One thing I don't like about the Star Wars movies is how incestuous they are. It's meant to be this huge galaxy, but every single movie has to revolve around this one small set of characters and events? What's the next trilogy going to be about, how they all bought the clothes they were wearing in A New Hope?

What I'd really like to see? I've suggested it before. Jump ahead, show us a ship from a century after TNG. Make it a transwarp ship that can travel on an intergalactic scale. A mixed crew of Klingons, Federation, Cardassian, Romulans, even Dominion - the major powers formed an alliance. Go big or go home.

Ah much like that interracial crew I posted earlier?

Maybe a four part mini series. Doubt the suits would want to risk putting out a big movie with an unknown cast.

Rogue One worked because it was built on the previous films and was a direct prequel to ANH

Not really. It sounds to me like GK is proposing something more like a vendetta party - i.e., not just dissimilar species but former active antagonists. Part of the built-in characterization is an exploration of the ways in which the members overcome their innate biases.
