Gene Wilder has passed at the age of 83 due to complications from Alzheimer's. It would be like spitting in the ocean to attempt to single out a few great roles of his, and impossible to capture his spirit and positivity.

Oh man, and I saw this just after I watched the Pure Imagination video in the youtube thread. :(

He truly was a fixture of movie life for me. Maybe not the best actor of his generation or anything, but just somebody who was always around, always making enjoyable movies. This sucks. :(

You really owe it to yourself to add The Frisco Kid (co-starring Harrison Ford) to that list. A little-known film compared to the Mel Brooks titles, but both hysterically funny in parts and with just a hint of pathos. Also, of course, Haunted Honeymoon with his late wife, Stir Crazy and Silver Streak with the great Richard Pryor, the Woody Allen classic Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex (but Were Afraid to Ask,) and the under-regarded directorial and starring vessel The Adventure of Sherlock Holmes' Smarter Brother.

And, by all accounts by those who would know, was just a genuinely sweet, positive, and caring person. His widow stated that he passed while holding her hand and listening to Ella Fitzgerald's "Over the Rainbow." I mean, you can't even write shit like that.

*EDIT* Here's an example of what I mean: I just read in his family's press release that he decided to keep his Alzheimer's private and avoid recent publicity because he didn't want to worry or disappoint any kids who might have recognized him as Willy Wonka - "He simply couldn't bear the thought of one less smile in the world."
