New war Game

So time for a new wargame I think.

I have 2 months holiday and then limited access for 3 more months.

While I could run a few of our classic battles, we’ve done a bunch of those, and I don’t feel like to doing a bunch of higher end trig.

So I thought we could play a newer style game I was developing over my last contract. I choose not to run the Borg one right now as that may run to long for me to finish in this break. Also I think others could easily run this if they wanted to once I work again.

Basically you are in the place of a Starfleet captain, given a mission and then you through a series of commands, complete the mission. Its going to be very open ended.

As an example:

Captain Edward USS Purge Intrepid
Mission: Convoy escort, near Son’s space.
Leaving Starbase A41 with 6 Federation Cargo ships you have been assigned to guard the convoy of Medical supplies to a Non Federation planet suffering a outbreak of an unknown disease.

Then basically you as captain have to issue orders turn by turn. Your orders can be absolutely anything, heading, speed, tactical ect ect ect, some fairly standard but when you face a issue such as attack or an unknow event you will have to make command decisions, and the harder the decision the more chances of failure.

The success will be based on a dice roll, kinda sorta similar to DnD but modified, modifiers will be placed depending on the experience of your crew, its current moral, the state of your ship ect.

Also from mission to mission you will mostly keep your crew and with successful missions or experience they will gain in experience increasing your effectiveness, the more you use your science department, the better they become, the better they can do more complex tasks.

Also at the end of every mission, you will face a captains, review, where I and some of the other captains, will review your mission and award commendations or discipline as needed.

Your first mission will be assigned, and depending on how you do, your next will either be assigned or you can select from options.

To start all we will need, is your request to play. (I will assign you a ship, after a few missions you may be awarded a more prestigious command).

Then you have 200 points to spend on your crew over 5 departments.

Command Crew (XO ect)
Opps
Tactical
Science
Engineering

Each department can max out at 100, so you can have everyone at 40, or some high and some low. Each successful mission you receive points to spend or some are automatically bumped up if you utilised that area in mission. Also you give your captain a previous department (Formerly Command, science, opps ect) which gives that department a 10+ bonus.

You are a newly captain so this being your first command you are going to be getting a lower end ship, refitted Miranda, Steam Runner ect.

Example

“I wanna play

Captain Teaos, formerly Opps.
Command 40
Science 40
Engineering 50
Tactical 30
Opps 40”

Then I start a game thread for you with your first mission, you submit your initial orders to your crew and any other ships in your command. Await turn 2. Mission length varies but can be anywhere from 10-40 turns.

I guess I can throw a few hours into this, I'll post late morning tomorrow (EST) with point breakdown by department. To that end, what might be helpful would be at least a rough idea of what different point values mean, or equate to as far as skill levels, or what can/can't be done at any given point value.

Points go from 0-100 in each department (plus the 10 bonus you get from your captains experience).

You can give any order at anytime regardless of point ranking. What changes is the skill in which the order is carried out and the likely hood of it working.

As an idea I consider 30 out of 100 a recent graduate of the Academy, think Ensign Nog in DS9. 40-50 would be new but competent, Harry Kim area, 50-70 your getting in the realm of a pretty good officer, early Worf and Riker, 70-90 you are in terms of a very competent officer, infact once they get this high they may infact be offered promotions (Latter era RIker, O'Brien, Paris). 90+ is in the top of their field, Spook, Data, Bashir ect.

So if you have an engineering department in the 30's, they can keep the ship running, make basic repairs and do everything by the book, but if you ask them to invert a phase modualtor or "Just make it work dammit" their chances are not good (But always possilble) where as if they are in the 80's and your weapons go offline, you can ask them to get them online regardless the cost and your star engineers will rip apart your holodecks and make your phasers work again.

The mechanics are based on a roll of a D20, higher and lower point scores just alter the modifyer on it, so you can get lucky with a poor crew or unlucky with a good one. But your chances are better generally.

The one thing you dont know, is exactly what mission you will get, I have 14 pre planned ones that are issued at random, once you get some experience and a nice relationship with the Admiralty, maybe they will let you take your choice of missions if you survive reveiw.

The idea here is to be much more open ended. All those times where we said, "If they just did X, it would have been fine" is what we are looking at here.

Can we split the points more than blocks of 10?

I'll go for:

Captain Griffin, formerly Science
Command 40
Science 40
Engineering 45
Tactical 45
Opps 30

Yeah you can make it anything, after your first missions most departments will get bumps of a few points at a time.

Will start you first mission today.

This sounds fun, I'm in, if there is still spaces (I didn't see specified how many slots there were.)

If there is spaces;

Captain Spocky, U.S.S. Aberystwyth (Blaenavon, if I can't rename my ship if I get a new one.)

Command: 50 (And Captain, former Security Officer)
Tactical: 20
Engineering:70
Ops:35
Science:20

Alright finally got some time (and PC access). I assume the timeline for this is post-Dominion War/Nemesis?

Captain Sonny Glick -- formerly Ops
Command: 50
Tactical: 55 (figure there's some Vets out there)
Engineering: 55 (again probably some SCE veterans)
Ops: 60 (a former Ops man is going to pick the best!)
Science: 45 (a lot of junior officers coming out of the academy)

Use a calculator, dude. You get 200 points to spend over the 5 departments, then add +10 to Ops. By my count you used 255 (+ 10.)
