UCS Askad Halarine

Post by Graham Kennedy »

The fighter support vessel Askad Halarine is one of the numerous support ships which operate with the Coalition Navy. Her primary job is
to "clean up" after a battee; she carries a complement of Roc class recovery craft which can recover damaged fighters and other subships,
bringing them back to one of the Halarine's three high ceilinged bays. From there the damaged craft are transferred into the rear of the ship,
where a huge network of repair shops and factories can repair virtually any level of battle damage; indeed the Askad Halarine can even build
new subships from scratch using only the necessary raw materials, though this is not a role she is very well suited for.

The Askad Halarine is neither fast nor agile; nor is she much to look at. Slab-sided, boxy, almost completely utalitarian in shape, she is
the epitome of the support ships of the Coalition fleet. Her midspace shunts are in the bow, rather than the stern as with most combat
vessels. This arrangement puts the engines ahead of the centre of mass, considerably simplifying steerage though at the cost of reducing
agility. The fuel tanks and power system are below the forward hangars, with machine shops and sets of bulk storage tanks aft.

Again, I applaud your willingness to put logical, common-sense designs over some misguided sense of "style" or some aesthetic idea which means nothing in space. Well done once more.

I can't help, though, thinking of part of Ford Prefect's description of a ship - "steers like a cow."

Only in this case it's looks like a cow... moves like a cow... steers like a cow. :)
