Where'd the department break down list come from? Also, am I the only one who thinks for a warship kind-of-rushed into service, the medical staff seems rather large?

If you look at the 2nd post In this thread, I found a list with a breakdown of the crew compliment of a daedalus class ship.

I saw that, that's the list I'm asking about ;-) I'm just curious as to where it came from.

I just searched daedalus deck plans on google and found it. If you are a department head then feel free to invent names for your department members.

Doesn't make it canon, or sensible.

I didn't say it did, it's the best we have though and it would be good to have 26 medical people on a warship.

Well, Sonic would seem to disagree.

Think of it this way, If you were commisioning an experimental warship going to the front line of earths first interstellar war against a species with technical superiority, would you have a small medical team or a large one?

It would depend on the size of the ship I'd say. I want to be clear, I'm not opposed to the idea, I just wonder about it. Recall, the Enterprise NX-01 for it's crew of 82 people only had 1 doctor -- and I would think they'd want a few more people out there on medical staff since no one really knew what situations they would run into. In fact in all of Trek, I don't think we've ever seen more than a dozen people on the medical staff at any given time, up to and including the E-D with it's ~1000 person manifest. I think, given the tone medical staff would be minimal (1 or 2 doctors and a few nurses/orderlies/assitants --- plus the MACO Medic) to handle whatever can be handled on the ship, but more serious injuries or a large number of casualties requiring treatment at a starbase.

You said "at any given time". Most ships work on a four shift or 3 shift rotation so you times that by 4 and you get 48 people. Now that was decided when the federation was at peace and the ship was designed as an explorer so you would expect the medical crew of a wartime batleship to be proportionally larger.

Fair point. I do find it odd though that everything happened during one shift in an episode. But that's a flaw in every trek episode  While I do see where you're coming from I would also expect the number of the medical crew to be proportional to the total crew number of the ship regardless of circumstances. The other thing is, we're writing about an organization becoming quite over-stretched. That was part of the premise going in (and my characters backstory) that Starfleet is starting to face the problem of having more jobs than it has people to fill them. While they are stepping up their recruitment and accelerating training, the entire organization is still somewhat overstretched.

However, the great thing about this RPG is that we're fairly democratic in how we do some things, so hopefully at some point some of the other members will chime in on this discussion and we can work out an agreement. ;-)

Just adding to my previous post, not all of the medical personell on duty will be in sickbay as some will probably be in the medlabs. BTW, what do you think of the deck plan?
