SF Debris: Blood Fever
SF Debris: Blood Fever
Our first look at Pon Farr since Amok Time.
Chuck is really enthusiastic reviewing this one. Nice to see him having fun.

Yes, because rape is very much a Pro-Woman ideal.

I love watching Voy attempt to explore Vulcans. The writers are as adept at logical thinking as Neelix is at wilderness survival.
Also, does anyone else see Pon Farr as an indicator that Vulcans don't really control their emotions, they just bottle them up until they explode?

It's like the Voyager writing staff never saw an episode of the the original series or at least never used them for study material for writing Star Trek.Lighthawk wrote:I love watching Voy attempt to explore Vulcans. The writers are as adept at logical thinking as Neelix is at wilderness survival.
I think if males don't ejaculate regularly, they become bloodthirsty, brute savages. Also, does anyone else see Pon Farr as an indicator that Vulcans don't really control their emotions, they just bottle them up until they explode?

If that were to root cause, I'd expect it to be random, rather than every seven years - given the regularity it seems more likely to be strictly biological, although why the species would evolve like that is anyone's guess.Lighthawk wrote:Also, does anyone else see Pon Farr as an indicator that Vulcans don't really control their emotions, they just bottle them up until they explode?
Only two things are infinite - the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the universe: Albert Einstein.

As an aside, the Vulcan practice of suppressing emotion (as opposed to "conquering" it) had been explored prior to this.

To the biological reason to only do it every 7 years, we know Vulcan is not a great M class planet, maybe doing it any moe than that can be dangerous to survival.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Wait... they can't get their swerve on because it's hot and heavy? How does that work?Teaos wrote:To the biological reason to only do it every 7 years, we know Vulcan is not a great M class planet, maybe doing it any moe than that can be dangerous to survival.

Re: SF Debris: Blood Fever
I think he meant more that bearing children more often than that would be dangerous, back when things like adequate water and food supplies would have been a daily issue. Still doesn't explain the hard 7 year time frame. If it was merely about every 7 years or so it might fit that kind of criteria better...unless of course Vulcan's orbit is such that every 7 years the climate becomes more hospitable and more friendly to starting families.
Re: SF Debris: Blood Fever
But if that were the case, then wouldn't every vulcan male undergo Pon Farr at the same time?Lighthawk wrote:...unless of course Vulcan's orbit is such that every 7 years the climate becomes more hospitable and more friendly to starting families.

Re: SF Debris: Blood Fever
Yeah, probably. So odds seem unlikely for that, don't they?
Re: SF Debris: Blood Fever
From since the time of Surak, Vulcans have been always repressed their natural urges and tendencies through meditation. Maybe that seven year itch thing is the average cycle that Vulcans have determined the hormones can overwhelm the individual male Vulcan's every attempt to control their bodies and minds.
Imagine every time we males got a boner, instead of rubbing one off or just having sex, we went and meditated. How long before we snap? Seven years is probably the male Vulcan's limit.

Exactly, it makes sense.
