Historical novel

I've just reread the Conqueror series by Conn Igguldens.
Its the story of the rise and rule of Gangus Khan told over 3 books each dealing with a different period of time (Childhood, taking asia, Middle east). It is a combination of true history with some fictional story telling mixed in with it. He tries to stay true to history as much as possible but for the sake of the story does change some moments.
He also did a series on Rome which I havent read yet. Anyone read these?
