Alexander Nevsky

Post by Lazar »

Has anyone here seen Alexander Nevsky? It's a film made in 1938 by Sergey Eisenstein, one of the greatest Russian directors, depicting the defeat of the Teutonic Knights by the 13th century Russian prince Alexander Nevsky. It was produced as a pretty blunt piece of Stalinist propaganda, but it's still technically awesome and definitely deserves to be seen. It has a great score by Prokofiev, and the climactic Battle on the Ice has influenced a lot of modern films.

It should be of special interest to sci fi fans too: the depiction of the full-helmeted, black-and-white uniformed Teutonic Knights (and their grotesque bishop-commander) clearly inspired the Galactic Empire from SW; and James Horner drew heavily on Prokofiev's score in Aliens and Star Trek II. Listen to the Battle on the Ice theme, and you'll notice that some segments of it sound nearly identical to the battle music from TWoK.

Nevsky also achieved his status as Grand Prince by collusion with the Golden Horde, a fact which I'm sure the film conveniently omits. :)
