Is this a virus/trojan/something?

So a couple of days ago I got one of those fake blizzard emails asking me to give them my info to reset my wow account.

Thing is, I don't play WoW, so I don't have a WoW account. Idiots. :bangwall:

So I open the email just to read it.

No biggie, right?

Well, yesterday I must have gotten over 50 of these spams, and I think my computer was generating them, because that same message was being sent on my name, but it was bounced back to me because it failed delivery, thankfully.

Doing a virus scan now, but I'm not very experienced in this kind of thing.

And today I'm locked out of my gmail account!!!!!!!!!

I know I should know this by now, but I thought you could only get infected from actually downloading something, can you get infected from just openning an email?

Good grief, and I've been taking classes in networking and such, for all my education I feel like I know nothing.

Thanks

LC

It would depend upon what email client you are using. If you are on Windows and use Outlook I could believe it.

I had something like that, with the Blizzard thing and multiple additional spams coming my way. But I never lost access to my webmail.

(Not using gmail, but another webmail. Look communication's, to be precise)

There have been issues with pages carefully constructed to cause problems.

It is possible that the email was set up to load some sort of graphic with an embedded virus, and once your computer downloaded the image, the virus came with it. Or so I'm told. Haven't bothered to find out, cause my email blocks all scripts and downloads until I approve it.

There weren't any images in the email though.

Well I've been using Ubuntu and haven't gotten any messages lately, so I think its a windows only bug. :P

But I still need to clean my windows installation.

I had a problem very like that a few months ago. Though I never got or opened any sort of spam mail before catching it.

Malwarebytes seemed to kill it for me.

Going to run malwarebytes in safe mode when I go to school in a few minutes.

May we suggest a set of nails and some C4, from a safe distance obviously :).
