The Expanded Universe was never actually officially canon. It was kept internally consistent and it was endorsed by George Lucas, but no one ever proclaimed the EU as the "official" continuation of the Star Wars Saga. So what Disney did wasn't as much an erasure, but more of a discontinuing of that particular series. Now obviously if you're a fan of that part of the Star Wars universe, yeah, that sucks, but it's not quite the same thing."
