Romulan Navy Defeated

In a savage battle along the border the Romulan Navy was defeated by a large force of Klingon warships. Exact details of the losses are not yet known but it is believed based on transmissions from the area that few if any of the Romulan ships stationed along the border managed to survive the assault.

Indeed it seems as if the Romulan military was taken entierly by surprise, a fact which stunned military analyst around the region given the rising tensions.

The Klingon High Command is releasing little information at this time but has released visuals of numerous burning Romulan and Klingon ships. They have suggested that much of the combat was conducted at brutally close ranges that led to high casualties on both sides.

Romulan Worlds Fall to Terror Weapons

The Klingons uveiled a mechanized armored warrior against the first Romulan world they assaulted. A series of widely distributed visuals that got out of the first world early during the invasion showed a visual of what appeared to be a mechanized suit standing more than 8 feet tall with a variety of protusions that are assumed to be weapons mounts. The machines additionally carried a mecahnized sword apparently for close combat and breaching and most terrifyingly included loud sound projectors that carried the war cries of Klingon soliders across the battlefield.

This noise, being projected at hundreds of decibels, was sufficient to shatter eardrums when in closer contact with the enemy.

Reports had the majority of Romulan troops breaking and running in the face of this new threat. Indeed as the panic spread many simply routed upon hearing the vocal projectors as their enemy approached.

Casualties among civilians were surprisingly light given that the Romulan Army would not stand and fight. The Klingons moved rapidly throughout the Romulan Empire taking advantage of the panic. They made no effort to impeed communications between Romulan worlds presumably in an effort to allow such information to spread and take hold across a variety of worlds. On particularly horrifying visual being sent around by Romulan News showed three Romulan soldiers impaled on the mechanized sword as one of the machines continued its advance down a Romulan street.

Analyst are mixed in their projection of the long-term utility of such weapons. Many believe that with proper training and equipment the development of man-portable weapon that can counter these devices is only a matter of time.

ISA Activates Some Reserves

In light of the current crisis the ISA nations activated a portion of their reserve fleets and stood to on alert as the Klingon and Romulan borders were closed to all traffic for the duration of the war. A broader mobilization has not yet followed but seems likely if the crisis were to continue to spread beyond Romulan borders.

Romulan Government Flees, but does not Surrender

The Romulan government has apprently fled Romulus, abandoning it for the time being to the Klingons. Where the bulk of the Romulan Fleet and the Government has gone remains a mystery at this time. Neither the Romulans nor the Klingons have said anything concrete on the subject.

Presumably the KDF is still engaged in an active search for both the Romulan Fleet and the government in exile as they are the key to brining a long-term end to the war. Just who is leading the government at this time is also subject to question as the previous leader was reported to have been killed in the defense of Romulus from the Klingons.

Romulan Remenant Remains Hidden, Occupation Tightens

Despite furious search efforts the Klingons and their allies were unable to turn up the escaped Romulan Fleet or government, which remained quiet for the remainder of the year. This fleet, presumed to be the bulk of the Imperial Navy is the one obstacle that stands in the way of total Klingon domination of the region.

Klingon troops spread throughout the region to establish an iron grip on the captured Romulan worlds which still stood in shock at the assault of the mechanized soldiers unleashed upon them earlier in the year. Rumors of a Romulan underground keep spreading but absent outside support it seems unlikely they could amass the weapons and numbers needed to drive the Klingons out on their own.

Desperate Romulan agents were able to take down the anti-matter production and storage complex on one undisclosed Klingon world but the high command has reported that the impact was negligible on operations. Of the 12 known operatives they destroyed 11 enroute, allowing only one to slip through.

Klingons and Tueri Claim space along Federation Border

The Tueri and Klingons took steps to close the Federations Northern border in their area by claiming space along it. The action was completed with the turnover of system 314 from Klingon control after its conquest from the Romulans to Tueri control. Many believe this to be the price extracted from the Klingons by the Tueri to keep them on the sidelines as their allies were struck down.

Cardassian Elections, Backers of Expansionsim Lose Seats

The prime backers of Union expanionsim lost heavily in the latest round of elections throwing the Union into a minor degree of disorder. Formerly a major memeber of the governing coalition the party most linked with expansionist activity lost almost all of its seats.

While the ruling party stayed firmly in control and even gained seats due to a variety of popular measures the vote is seen as a repudiatio of the expansionist agenda undertaken by the government. Any new coalition is likely to have far different goals and far different priorities than the previous regime.

Panic, Anger on Federation Border Worlds

After a recent diplomatic spat caused the Federation to break off relations with the Klingon Empire the border worlds have seen a rise in extremist parties on both sides of the issue as people flock away from the centrist, broad-based parties.

In a near even split the people have either flocked to join and support the Rimward Defense League, which advocates a hardline with the Klingons and increased defense spending on the part of the Federation, or the Greens who advocate a return to Federation ways as they were before the encounter with the Borg. So far this split is most prominent in the worlds near the Klingon Empire as citizens debate how to deal with the huge power opposite them but it is playing its way across the Federation as a whole as the centrist parties struggle to keep an increasingly polarized populace happy.

In a public debate on the issue a Cabinet minister denied that the council had received a diplomatic communication from the Klingon Empire asking them to censure the President stating it would be the height of diplomatic impropriety for that to occur.

The represetative from Betazed questioned why the president would take such a harsh line with the Klingons and suggested he had been in error to respond in that manner to an obvious Klingon provocation. This led to a response from the Andorian representative and member of the cabinet that asked how long the Federation must humor the Klingons and their insults.

Huge Financial Activity Increase

The Ferengi Commerce Authority has reported that the past year was the largest in terms of movement of funds across international borders in recorded history with tens of millions of credits moving every month. The Gorn appeared to be the largest player both spending a great deal and taking a great deal in. It is suspect they made several large arms sales and possibly several large arms purchases however the end buyers or sellers are not known.

The long stagnant market for Anti-Matter was also heavily active during this period, creating a new avenue for profit for all powers.

The Ferengi declined to comment further on activities saying only that the past year was indeed very profitable.

Romulan's Strike Back!

A massive Romulan fleet moved aggressively back into Romulan space from the North, surprising the Klingons and driving the KDF back across many dozens of light-years without it being able to fire a shot. Apparently spread then in the search for the Romulan fleet the KDF was not in a position to resist and has elected to fall back in the face of the Romulan rush.

The large Romulan fleet appears to have been supplemented by a large number of foreign procured vessels, many of them of Ferengi design origin. However as these vessels serve with a variety of fleets it is hard to tell their exact source. One trade described encountering a large force of these vessels and described many of them to still be in their Gorn and Cardassian markings, apparently rushed into service as soon as the transfers could be completed.

For the moment a massive fleet battle has been avoided, however it seems that there will soon be a clash that will eclipse most of the major battles of the Dominion War as the Romulans seem possessed to push on into their former territory.

Romulan Uprisings, Massive Orbital Bombardments Remove Some Systems from Klingon Control

The Romulan's, lacking traditional troops to retake worlds have spread weapons among their populace in conjunction with large scale orbital bombardments of worlds to retake them from the Klingon's. An exact list of worlds (OOC: Still working on that part) was not avaliable at this time but the need to use such tactics has left some to speculate that as many as 50% of all Romulan civilians on those worlds were likely killed in the assaults as the war has entered a new and brutal phase.

Romulan and Klingon Fleets Collide

The long awaited confrontation between the Romulan and Klingon fleets appears to have arrived as long range sensors within the Federation picked up signs of the battle getting underway. At present results are not known, though many sources estimate as many as 6,000 ships might be invovled in the confrontation.

Romulans Close to Surrending

After a brutal battle which saw the destruction of almost the whole Romulan fleet and a substantial portion of the Klingon Defense Force the two sides have come to the negotiating table with the Romulans essentially accepting the Klingon proposals for absolute surrender. The Romulan commanders are still holding out for some form of protected settlement in which they can live under their own laws. It is unkown at this time if they will be able to wring such concessions from the Empire.

Foreign Ships figure Heavily in Recent War

Ships of foreign design, particularly those emerging from the Ferengi-Kazon Imperium, figured heavily in the recent war between the Romulans and Klingons. The designs performed well, in many cases outperforming their Klingon counterparts.

A spokesmen for the FKI had the following statement.

"We don't really care how our ships are used so long as the buyer pays cash. We are happy that the designs performed as intended and have invested heavily to provide our customers with first rate products."

When asked who the cash had come from or and to whom they had sold the designs the spokesmen declined to comment and simply stated that whomever was paying their money would spend just fine. It is widely believed that the recent Midas Class and Exchequer Class ships have been vastly more profitable for the FKI than any previous designs, with many estimating the income from the programs to be in the mid to high 9 figure range.

Romulans Surrender

Admitting defeat the final Romulan forces surrendered to the Klingon Empire last evening. The Romulans will retain a small protectorate that will be under final Klingon rule. While this technically preserves the Romulan state it appears to do so in name only. The Romulans will retain internal authority over Romulus, Rhemus and a handful of worlds near that system. The degree of independence is unkown at this time but given that the Klingon Empire has effectively closed the border of the Romulan State it is expected that whatever independence there is will be sharply limited.

Romulan Refugees pour over Federation Border

Taking advantage of the major fleet battle and resulting lack of border defenses in the area many Romulans with access to any sort of ship fled across the Federation border where their ships were impounded and they were transfered to refugee camps to receive humanitarian assistance. Tales of overcrowded shuttle types pushed to the limit both in terms of range and carrying capacity have been the primary means of transport.

While reports on the exact number of refugees are not yet published it is widely accepted that several millions escaped across the border in this fashion. There are additionally a number of unconfirmed reports of shuttles running short of fuel within a LY or two of the border, packed with families doomed to die in the noman's land that is a result of the present political difficulties.

Ferengi-Kazon Imperium Gone?

In a series of events beginning in November the FKI first went to a paniced and frenzied war footing and then has mysteriously gone dark. No transmissions have escaped the region since December and what little information is know is highly fragmented and confused.

Some talk of a massive invasion, though none can be specific on the source of the attack. Some speculated it was the Klingons but the Klingon government quickly moved to point out it was simply transfering ships to the FKI as part of a sale agreement.

Starfleet is known to have a force of some size in the region but has refused to comment on the situation at this time.

For the moment rumors of massive casualties continue to make waves across space in the nearby areas.

International economic markets have not yet had time to digest and react to the news but the loss of a major economic players is likely to impact regional economies in a negative manner if indeed the FKI is no more.

Klingons Continue Pacification of Romulan Space

The stern occupation of Romulan space has continued as imperial assessors have established the basic workings of imperial government amongst the Romulan peoples. This process is expected to be long and laborious for the Klingon Empire but in the end should yield a domain that rivals the Federation in terms of citizens and wealth.

Meanwhile it continues to be rumored that the Klingons look openly at the small remaning Romulan protectorate with aims to add it to their imperial realm at the first opportunity.

Cardassians Admit to Loss of Heavy Weapons

Talarian attacks of the last two years have resulted in the loss of "an inconsiderable amount" of heavy weaponry by the Cardassian military. This admission, which had long been suspected but denied, cast doubt upon the Unions ability to control this race of primatives who seem to love their independence more than life.

While the most recent year passed without major incident the Talarian attacks already forced one major coalition government from power and have played a major role in shaping Cardassian politics over the past five years.

Imperium of Martok Declared

The Klingon Empire has been re-christened the Imperium of Martok in honor of the fallen emperor and now god of the Klingon people. This name is meant to commemorate his passing and inspiration in the war that ultimately ended in the defeat of the Romulans and their addition to the empire.

The past year was declared a year of celebration that was marked by massive festivals in the honor of the fallen god.

No News on Ferengi Fate

The various rimward governments plus other interested parties are keeping very tight any information on what happened to the FKI in the past year. It is known that the Federation and other governments have been trying to quietly investigate what has happened there. Rumors are spreading in the region that the Borg are involved. To date authorities have managed to keep panic from spreading to the border worlds, but it is clear that many people are unease about recent developments.

Pakleds Swarm into Federation

Billions of Pakleds, fleeing from what was presumed to be the same threat that overhwhelmed the FKI, have flooded into the rimward territories of the Federation. Being Pakled they have largely been unable to explain why they fled their homes beyond stating that they were told "We must go now".

Federation citizens have found their tempers strained by the recent influx. Anti-Pakled protest have broken out on many of the afflicted worlds. One Federation official described the visitors as "semi-retarded, thieving, lying children". Communications have been flooding into the council demanding that something be done about the Pakled refugee but with Billions of them present it will take a large scale effort for Starfleet to relocate them, assuming a suitable planet can be found.

The same official who gave the above comment when asked about where they should be relocated to stated only that the Federation should find them a planet where the "ground is soft and the suns shines all day because if I have to listen to their collective wails of lament to 'find the shiny' when the sunset one more time I might well kill myself."

Tzenkethi Vote to Join Federation

A long rumored possibility became a reality when at the conclusion of the year the Tzenkethi voted to being the 3-year process of joining the Federation. The two powers were former enemies but many Tzenkethi citizens were impressed that the Federation stepped in and prevented the Cardassians from over-running the small state years ago.

The vote passed with a majority of 62% of the Tzenkethi citizens voting yes on the measure.

The Federation Council voted unanimously to add the Tzenkethi to the Federation after supporting a long string of democratic reforms in the territory during its time as a protectorate.

Kurn the Mad Holds Massive Gladiatorial Games in Martok's Honor

Rumors are sketchy but it was reported that as part of the year of festivals honoring the ascension of Martok to god status the newly minted chancellor held a series of gladiatorial games in the what has been termed the Pit of Everlasting Sacrifice where the former capitol stood before the treacherous Romulan attack. Reports are that up to 1 million Klingons competed in hand to hand combat in the pit for the honor of being among the first 1,000 to be sacrificed in the memory of Martok.

The event, titled "Blood for the Blood Gods, Souls for the God-Emperor" lasted more than a week.

The final one thousand survivors were crucified while singing the honors of Martok. Massive spikes driven through their shoulders, wrists, ankles and knees. Their chests torn to give the flow of blood to the Ulter of Martok. The longest lasted for eleven days before her death.

Chancellor Kurn served as the host for the event to which several foreign diplomats were invited. The Breen ambassador was reported to have sat stoically behind his mask through the whole of the event at the chancellor's side. The Carassian and Gorn representatives attended the first day of the festival and then politely excused themselves for the remainder once they discovered what the "blood opera" entailed.

The Tueri ambassador reportedly was seen fleeing for the bathroom within minutes of the festivals opening moments. Other outsiders reactions ranged from moderately amused to frightened to horrified.

Taiidan Stun Imperium of Martok with Surprise Raid

The mysterious new power known as the Taiidan stunned their only apparent friend in the Imperium of Martok with a lightening strike through the heart of the Klingon Empire. After receiving a shipment of ore from the Imperium the Taiidan launched some portion of their fleet in a massive raid through the major systems of the Imperium.

Reports of casualties are sketchy but are rumored to number into the tens of billions as the Taiidan thoroughly bombarded any world and its war making resources they could make an approach to.

Damage reports are sketchy at this point as the Imperium is saying little. Analyst estimate anywhere from 30-60% of the war making potential of the Imperium could have been wiped out in the strikes.

The strikes began on the Eastern border of the Imperium and made their way parallel to the former Romulan and Federation borders before apparently turning towards the interior of the Klingon Empire. News from the interior is spotty at best at this point.

Federation and Gorn come to defense of QonoS
Upon receiving news of the attack on the Imperium of Martok the Federation and Gorn governments made the decision to move against the Taiidan threat, despite the fact that it meant helping a once bitter enemy. As both military forces have gone into wartime information lockdowns exact details are unclear but Starfleet has acknowledged that it and the Gorn deployed a substantial force pulled from several fleets that participated in the successful defense of QonoS. They are not at this time releasing losses.

This force was deployed after a diplomatic note delivered to the Taiidan received no response and the attack appeared as if it would continue unabated.

Rumors are swirling that the Imperium of Martok found its fleet either dangerously out of position or dangerously out-gunned and that without Federation and Gorn assistance it might have found itself nearly wiped out. The Starfleet spokesperson deflected these rumors stating they were pure rubbish.

Quadrant Reacts to Widening War
Developments occurred with a rapid pace in the last 5 months of the year as other governments struggled to come to terms with the rapidly changing military and political climate of the quadrant. There are rumors that the Cardassian Union was upset to some degree about the decision of the Federation and Gorn to intervene in defense of QonoS. Again these have been impossible to pin down as all governments have been on lockdown since the start of the conflict.

What is known is that no official declaration of war has come forth from the Union at this time.

The Breen are thought to be firmly in the Klingon corner but have not to this point taken action, be it due to distance from the conflict or other concerns no one is sure, but they are expected to make their presence felt in this conflict in the future.

The Tueri have reportedly mobilized their forces but no official statement has been made by their government either to this point.

The Shelliak have said little in public. They were reported to be active in diplomatic circles, though few seem willing to listen to their confusing and legalistic positions on most issues.

Disaster for Grand Alliance at Orias? Taiidan Storm into Union

Early reports indicate that a substantial allied fleet is taking a beating at the Orias system as Cardassian forces were caught poorly deployed along with allied powers that had deployed within their space. The Grand Alliance, born of the intervention by the Federation and Gorn to save the Imperium of Martok, has struggled through the first several months of the conflict to coordinate its disparate forces and agree on an overall strategy for the conduct of the war.

By all reports the Cardassian fleet was caught fairly off guard despite the fact that it was allowing the staging of forces openly engaged in a war with the Taiidan within its territory.

Multiple Large Anti-Matter Explosions ripple across former FKI worlds

Long-range civilian observatories have detected large anti-matter based explosions on systems 180, 184, 186 and 187 in the former FKI. Initial estimates place the total yield of the assaults in the 300-500 gigaton range. Reports out of the planets are fragmented at best. No reports from either Allied or Taiidan channels have yet been made public. No estimate of casualties has yet been given. Allied governments are quiet on the issue.

March 10

Explosions spread across the FKI; Ferenginar Hit; Billions more assumed dead; Weapons of Cardassian Origin?

The series of explosions continued to spread across former FKI space today. Ferenginar was not spared the fate of other worlds and was subjected to the same heavy bombardment of unclaimed origin, at least publicly, to this point. Casualties are estimated to be near total on all worlds, though some large mass of survivors will cling to life for a time, baring immediate and massive aid few can expect to survive more than six-months.

Astronomers have traced the timing of the explosions and determined that the likely launch point was somewhere in the Cardassian Union, assuming the weapons were all launched at the same speed around the same time. There are rumors that the Cardassian government threatened repirsals for a recent Taiidan attack on a major city in the Orias system but that is as yet unconfirmed.

Casualty estimates to this point stand at 85 billion, with nearly half of those being fatalities already.
