Wait, people liked this episode?

I'm also puzzled. I found it incredibly boring, even ignoring uber-righteous Janeway.

Janeway's involvement was the biggest problem for me. For a good shepherd she was a total bitch with no real empathy or clue how to handle her wayward sheep.

Yeah, this was another episode they could have done without. Sad part is if they removed the bad ones, there wouldn't be much left.

It could have worked. They'd already done it once with getting the Maquis in shape but it still could have worked if Janeway hadn't been... Janeway. If she hadn't been a domineering self-righteous bitch without a clue it could have worked.

Oh of course. The problem is the writers seemed to love the Janeway they worked so hard to make...

This episode could have been done well, but it would have taken an effort (not much) rarely seen by the VOY writing staff.

The problem with VOY was that Janeway was infallable. Whatever she did, it was always the Right Thing. Offhand, I can't remember any episode where Janeway turned around at the end and said "wow, maybe that wasn't such a good idea after all".

There was Night, when she finally seemed to have figured out that blowing up the Array had been a bad idea, but IIRC that moment of sanity had been abandoned by the end of the episode.

She moped about it for a good 30 minutes, and even then by the end of it she seemed to go, "Eh, it wasn't that bad. I was right to uphold Starfleet principles."

I wouldn't have minded if Herron spaced Billy the Hypochondriac. Have to do something about those weak links.

Yeah but Janeway phasering her own people is more in line with her character. What kills me, why does she berate Herron for phasering the slug right after she just phasered the guy it was in? Do as I say not as I do?

Maybe Janeway is a member of some futuristic PETA. Animals are more important than people. Or maybe she would learn how to control minds from the space slugs.

Death to Billy!

Because Janeway is allowed to do stuff like that.

Question... was there a hypospray nearby when she shot him?
