An excellent review. I never noticed all those paralells that were in the film before.

I actually did notice the Moby Dick reference, none of the others, but quite interesting...

And quick brilliant review, more over, a brilliant movie.

Agreed - the Moby Dick references are pretty obvious, mainly thanks to Khan quoting it every chance he gets, but I hadn't noticed the others before.

Overall I think it's appropriate that the best example of Trek stood as the basis for the best OSTEG thus far - including the original quotes from Moby Dick, King Lear and Paradise Lost in the appropriate points of the analysis was excellent.

yes, it certainly is, and a good one at that. This was definetly a great movie, and one thin he mentioned that annoys me as well is when people say TWOK is a shoot-em-up movie... It really isn't. It's a lot more of a mind game. Which I quite enjoyed it as, and I'm quite glad that they used this story as the basis for this movie, it was excellently done and even better reviewed...

Aye, he's quite right on that part. When you add it all up, there's very little of the movie that actualy has people shooting and explosions happening. It's a more mental form of warfare.

I want to read Paradise Lost now...
What does defeat mean to you?

Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

You haven't before? 'Round here, that's required reading in high school.

We dont have required reading as such. All the english work we do is designed for answering an exam, apart from coursework where the book is chosen by the teacher from a specific list of books. Pre-1914 prose for example, Mrs. Nailor decided to do Jane Eyre. we dont have specific books that we HAVE to do.

Hmm. Many schools around here, expecially 7-12th grades (ages 13 -18,) have required reading as part of their English program syllabi. I've always appreciated the classics, but many students would never have picked up Melville, Shelley, Stoker, Huxley, etc., if they weren't required. My problem with required reading lists is that they often omit earlier works such as Chaucer, Spenser, Milton (although as I mentioned Milton was on one of my lists,) Beowulf, etc.

 My entire HS English curriculmn consisted of Shakespeare, Shakespeare, 1984, Shakespeare and yet more Shakespeare. I would have done practically anything to get to read something else, I picked up Moby Dick on my own cause I was so fragging sick of that shite.

Hmmm. We touched relatively little on Shakespeare. I had a dedicated Shakespeare class in HS, but even that tended to stay away from the typical "standards" and focused more on The Tempest, Troilus and Cressida, and Richard III.

Let's see: Merchant of Venice (pretty good), Lord of the Flies (not too bad), The Mayor of Casterbridge (yawn) and Death of a Salesman.

For the last one we went (i.e. were forced) to go and see it at the local theatre. Virtually everyone fell asleep.
